The municipality of Yaiza invites the population of Lanzarote to the colloquium of Crowned Money, on advances, results and research experiences at the San Marcial de Rubicón site that will take place this Wednesday. The conference will be at the Uga Camel Center starting at 5:00 p.m. where the scientific team that is carrying out the reference exploration in the Los Ajaches area will participate.
This archaeological intervention completed its fourth phase of research on October 20 with surprising bone and coin findings, among other elements. This research project is protected by an agreement signed between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Yaiza City Council and the two public universities of the Archipelago since 2018.
The conversation, which can also be followed in streaming on the cover of the municipal website, confirms the participation of the archaeologists directing the research, María del Cristo González, professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Esther Chávez, professor at the University of La Laguna, the restorer Patricia Prieto, from the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park of Gran Canaria, Ignacio Romero, head of Hiking Lanzarote, and public representatives Miguel Ángel Clavijo, General Director of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, and Óscar Noda González, mayor of Yaiza.
The Councilor for Heritage of Yaiza, Silvia Santana, emphasizes “the importance of explaining in a simple way to the population the partial results of the research of what was the first Franco-Norman settlement in the Canary Islands that shows the first contacts between European and native Canarian culture in the 15th century”.

After this approach to archaeological research, Yaiza also hosts on Thursday, the 14th of this same week, in its House of Culture (7:00 p.m.), another interesting meeting with the academy. This is the talk by the professor of modern history and former rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Manuel Lobo Cabrera, entitled Slavery in the eastern Canary Islands in the 16th and 17th centuries, which is organized by the Yaiza City Council and the Pueblo Maho Cultural Association.
“Last weekend we had the presentation of the book The Island of the Volcanoes with its author, the retired professor from Oxford, Roger Trend, we continue the scientific dissemination with the colloquium on the Rubicón site and on Thursday we have the conference by Professor Manuel Lobo, three activities that show our interest in offering new spaces for knowledge, information, debate and reflection. Well-being is not only built with concrete”, adds Mayor Óscar Noda.
