Since this Friday, the Torrelavega Society hosts the exhibition 'Traditional Crop Systems' organized by Senderismo Lanzarote.

An inauguration that included, first, the conference on 'Lime and Lime Kilns in Lanzarote', given by the Official Chronicler of Teguise, Francisco Hernández Delgado, with the support of Ignacio Romero (Nacho), representative of Senderismo Lanzarote.

Francisco Hernández surprised the public since some attendees discovered for the first time the cultural and historical values of 'Lime and Lime Kilns'. According to the Chronicler, lime was a product of prime necessity in the Canary Islands until the mid-20th century, whether for the construction and waterproofing of homes or to cauterize trees and prevent pests in agriculture. Its multiple uses made it a highly appreciated export product in Madeira and the rest of the Canary archipelago, which made this economic activity the sustenance of numerous families in Lanzarote.

Regarding the 'Lime Kilns', the Chronicler explained in great detail that lime kilns are popularly known in Lanzarote as 'caleras' and can be found throughout the island's geography, especially in coastal areas such as Janubio. Before the Timanfaya eruptions, the Royal Port of Janubio was the main embarkation port for the export of lime. Other coastal areas such as Rubicón, Arrieta, and Órzola have a significant presence of lime kilns. In the interior, the municipality of Teguise preserves an important group of these constructions. The conference ended with an interesting debate led by the speaker Francisco Hernández and Ignacio Romero.

Next, the program for the 'XIV Hiking Meeting Island of Lanzarote' was presented, which in this edition will have a total of 33 routes to be developed between the 1st and 10th of this month. Routes suitable for all audiences, having different difficulty ranges and different transit areas. Ignacio Romero stated that this is a continuous commitment to enhance the natural, cultural, and heritage environment through a respectful and educational social event. The chosen routes will pass through places with a geology rich in calcium carbonate (caliche crusts), or through lime kilns. Participants will also have to refine their objectives to immortalize interesting details of the routes to participate in the seventh photography contest that, as always, has attractive prizes.

The exhibition can be visited until January 6, 2024.
