About 600 children from fifth grade participated this past Wednesday, May 28, in the final exhibition of the workshop Garrote wrestling, a classroom resource, held at the Agapito Reyes de Altavista Football Field. At the end of the exhibition, diplomas were awarded to the participating educational centers.
This day marked the closing of the training process developed in the municipality of Arrecife around Canary garrote wrestling, a cultural and sporting manifestation of great heritage value.
The objective of this day was to offer students a vivential, playful and formative experience that reinforced what they had learned, promoted active participation and fostered cultural identity. The activity was developed with the active collaboration of the teachers, who participated together with the monitors with their group.
The purpose of this meeting was to hold a final meeting with the students participating in the garrote wrestling project, promoting the safe and guided practice of this discipline in a collaborative and participatory environment.
The day consisted of organizing the children into rotating groups to participate in a garrote wrestling match with adapted material, and in a technical garrote wrestling workshop with wooden garrotes.
A total of ten schools in Arrecife have participated in this workshop, organized by the Canary Canary Puppy Order in Lanzarote, together with the Canary Garrote Wrestling Federation and the Arrecife City Council's Education area. The workshop lasted two months, on a rotating basis.
Canary garrote is a traditional practice of the Canary Islands that consists of a fight between two contestants armed with a wooden garrote. It is a traditional combat art and a federated sport, with a wide range of techniques and internationally recognized.
