"We are the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands and that doesn't happen every day", expresses an emotional president of the Los Buches marine band, Juan Antonio Machado, this Thursday. He sounds nervous on the other end of the phone, he has just received a call from the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, informing him of the award.
He already communicated it to his entire group through a WhastApp message. "I am very sorry that I cannot be there today, but the vice president is there and they will surely celebrate it at the headquarters", Machado said in statements to La Voz.
The collection of this insignia is part of a "quite arduous" work, he explains. First, the Arrecife City Council plenary session voted to initiate the procedures that could grant this traditional carnival group recognition for its importance in the city. Then, it was ratified by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and elevated to the Government of the Canary Islands.
This year the group is celebrating 60 years since the founding of the Los Buches marine band. "The authentic traditional representatives together with the Diabletes and the Carneros de El Hierro", recalls its president. Now it will be about celebrating this tribute in an event on the street with all the people of Lanzarote and in particular with those of Arrecife.
