The PSOE of Lanzarote denounces that the Cabildo allocated 25,559.19 euros of public money to the trip of the Minister of Sports, Juan Monzón (Partido Popular), and two members of his department to Hawaii to attend the Ironman World Championship.
The trip, made between October 5 and 14, was fully funded by the island institution, according to the report provided to the Socialist Group in response to their information request.
Socialist minister Benjamín Perdomo describes the disbursement as "disproportionate" and demands explanations from the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort. "Three people, ten days of travel, and more than 25,500 euros at the expense of the Cabildo. Betancort has to explain why his government considered it necessary to cover this bill to attend the Ironman in Hawaii. Lanzarote's money deserves much more care," he states.
The documentation puts the expenses corresponding to minister Juan Monzón at 9,265.14 euros. Of that amount, 4,111.99 euros correspond to accommodation; 2,462.41 euros, to tickets and transport; 1,750 euros, to maintenance and islander bonus; 400 euros, to a rental car; and 540.74 euros, to other authorized expenses to be justified.
The other two members of the delegation, the head of events and the area coordinator, incurred expenses of 8,152.03 and 8,142.02 euros, respectively. The accommodation for the three people amounted to 12,335.97 euros, almost half of the total trip cost.
"Monzón's accommodation alone exceeds 4,100 euros, to which 1,750 euros for maintenance and islander bonus are added. It is the Cabildo itself that acknowledges these amounts. We want to see the invoices and know the criteria by which this expense was authorized," says Perdomo.
The report justifies the trip by meetings with Ironman officials, observation of organizational aspects of the event, and preparation for the Lanzarote edition in 2027. For the PSOE, these reasons "do not clarify why it was necessary to send three people for ten days nor what specific commitments were reached to justify an expense of more than 25,500 euros."
