The free invitations to attend the conference Movies and Home Movies of Lanzarote at the Filmoteca Canaria, which will be given by the researcher Saúl Rojas, can now be reserved on the web of the conference series Memory of Thursdays

The conference will take place this Thursday, January 18, at 7:00 p.m., in the José Saramago Room of the César Manrique Foundation, in Arrecife, and will address the professional and amateur cinema shot in Lanzarote that is kept in the archives of the Filmoteca Canaria.

Close collaboration between Filmoteca Canaria and Digital Memory of Lanzarote

Digital Memory of Lanzarote has maintained a close collaboration with the Filmoteca Canaria for more than a decade in the compilation of domestic cinema on the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, thanks to which more than two hundred domestic film tapes have been digitized and are available to the public on the portal (www.memoriadelanzarote.com). Also, thanks to this cooperation, the International Home Movie Day was celebrated in Lanzarote in 2012, for the first time in the Canary Islands.

Rachel Welch or Alain Delon, but also Rainer Erler

But also in this conference will be discussed, above all, the cinema shot in Lanzarote. Since the sixties, the island has served as a set for more than fifty national and international films. During these decades, great names of cinema have passed through Lanzarote, from highly awarded directors such as the Spanish Pedro Almodóvar and Juan Antonio Bardem or the Germans Werner Herzog and Wolfgang Petersen; to international stars such as Raquel Welch, Rita Hayworth, Omar Sharif, Alain Delon, Dennis Quaid, or Penélope Cruz.

The talk will focus mainly on those audiovisual works made during the twentieth century that have been completely relegated to oblivion. Fundamentally, feature films signed in co-production between several European countries or entirely German productions made for the small screen. This last point bears the seal of the cult director Rainer Erler during the seventies.

Saúl Rojas

The person in charge of giving the talk will be Saúl Rojas, a researcher specialized in the history of cinema in the Canary Islands and a collector of cinematographic advertising material. He has collaborated in the exhibition Landscape of celluloid. Cinema shot in Lanzarote, organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote. In 2018 he took charge of the inventory of the advertising archive of Video Mercury Films (Madrid). Also, during 2023 he worked on the catalog book Ramón Saldías: a legacy of history, cinema and advertising, written by Onintze Saldías Beltrán.
