The XII Love and Heartbreak Letters Contest "Los Novios del Mojón", a contest aimed at amateur writers that has been consolidating and making a place for itself in the national scene of literary contests, already has winners. The Casa-Museo del Timple in Teguise was the place chosen by the Department of Culture to announce the jury's decision in an event held on Friday night.
In this edition, a total of 130 letters were submitted, of which 80% came from the peninsula and some also from abroad. In compliance with the established rules, 10 finalist letters were selected, from which the jury, made up of personalities related to the literary world such as Laura Ruíz Medina, Bachelor of Journalism, María Moreira, Businesswoman and Esaú Pérez, graduate in Spanish Language and Literature, chose as the winning letter, awarded with 300 euros, "The Last Lights", by Antonio Mejías Melquizo, native of Granada. The second prize, endowed with 150 euros, went to the letter "Afternoon", by Virginia Brito García, native of Telde (Gran Canaria).
The event began with the singer-songwriter from Lanzarote, Maru Cabrera. A young woman who has evolved a lot, demonstrating her creative capacity, which since she was very young has understood music as a vital medium, giving free rein to her powerful voice. A gift for her followers.
Next, the acting mayor, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, was in charge of welcoming the attendees on behalf of the corporation. He was very satisfied with the participation that the contest is receiving year after year. Later, he gave the floor to the head of Culture, Olivia Duque, who said that "this type of contest tries to encourage all lovers of writing to participate and show their mastery".
The event continued with the reading of the seven finalist letters in the voices of the readers participating in the Literary Thursdays that participate every month in the Municipal Library of Teguise managed by the librarian, Arminda Arteta. The three members of the jury read the winning letters, ending the event with a performance by the singer-songwriter Maru Cabrera.
