The Cabildo de Lanzarote presented this Thursday the exhibition Ángel Guerra, a writer from Lanzarote, a retrospective exhibition in which an attempt is made to publicize and value the significant and committed literary career of this writer from Lanzarote, author of such landmark texts as La Lapa, Al jallo, A merced del viento or Justicia del llano.
The exhibition can be visited from this Thursday, June 13 to September 21, 2024 at the Casa de Cultura in Arrecife. It seeks to publicize, value and disseminate the biography and literary, journalistic and political career of a Lanzarote native who was always concerned about his island and its people and who left an exceptional testimony through his texts, making him a personality in the poetic and intellectual panorama of Spain in the first decades of the 20th century.
This exhibition has been promoted and produced by the Culture Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, with the heritage funds of the Municipal Historical Archive of the Teguise City Council. It has been previously exhibited in the Convent of Santo Domingo de Teguise and in the Casa de Cultura de Arrecife, being curated by Zebensuí Rodríguez Álvarez and Pepe Betancort, philologists and researchers of the literary heritage of Lanzarote.
The Minister of Culture of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Jesús Machín Tavío, has expressed that "updating and re-exhibiting this exhibition reminds us of the need to continue claiming and valuing the significant and committed role as a writer, politician and journalist of a Lanzarote native like Ángel Guerra, who not only deeply loved his land and its people, but also knew how to place it within the geography of the literary".
Abigail González, Councilor for Culture of the Arrecife City Council; María Mar Boronat, Councilor for Culture of the Teguise City Council and the curators of the exhibition, Pepe Betancort and Zebensuí Rodríguez, were also present during the presentation. All of them highlighted the relevance of the Teguise author.
Complete retrospective
In this year 2024, two literary anniversaries are celebrated. On the one hand, March 19, 2024 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Lanzarote author (Teguise, 1874-Madrid, 1950) and, on the other hand, on February 21, the election of the aforementioned writer as Writer of the Day of Canarian Literature by the Government of the Canary Islands was celebrated.
Ángel Guerra developed an intense literary, journalistic, essayistic and political career between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He played an important and relevant role within the extraordinary group of Lanzarote writers and intellectuals of the time, such as the brothers Elías, Tomás and Antonio Zerolo, Isaac Viera, Benito Pérez Armas, Antonio María Manrique, Francisco Fernández de Bethencourt or Miguel Pereyra de Armas. The author is a relevant and exceptional exponent of Canarian Regionalism, with an intellectual discourse in favor of the poorest and most disadvantaged individuals of the time, even vindicating the role of women and the defense of gender equality.
