As part of the cultural events for its 80th anniversary, the Torrelavega Recreation and Sports Culture Society inaugurated the exhibition 'A Time of My Life' by the artist Concha Núñez Monfort last Thursday night. The event began with welcoming remarks from the society's vice president, Luis González, who offered a review of the author and her work.
Cross-stitch, an embroidery technique that consists of making diagonal stitches to form a cross or an "X" on the fabric, is the central axis of the exhibition. This manual work requires not only skill but also great patience and dedication. The author has invested more than a year in creating each exhibited painting.
Concha Núñez Monfort explained that the presented collection is the result of more than ten years of work, carried out in her free time, often accompanied by the radio or in the company of family members. "Each painting is a book, and each stitch is a page," she expressed emotionally, emphasizing that each work represents a period of her life and relives significant moments each time she contemplates them.
Vice President Luis González concluded his speech by thanking the author for sharing her valuable work with the Torrelavega Society. Subsequently, Concha Núñez Monfort took the floor to express her gratitude for the warm reception of her works, both by the society's management and by the present audience. She made a call to the new generations to learn and continue with the cross-stitch technique, preventing it from falling into oblivion.
The act ended with the intervention of the president Toñín Ramos and the vice president, who highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting cultural traditions through events like this.
The second part of the cultural event, framed in the 80th anniversary of the Torrelavega Recreation and Sports Culture Society, began with the performance of the Teguey Popular Music Group of San Bartolomé. This group, created at the end of 2017 by residents of San Bartolomé and other towns on the island, is musically directed by Professor Leo García Corujo and has about 25 members.
For this concert, Teguey selected a varied repertoire of their own compositions, some of which are included in their first record work "This is my Town". Among the pieces performed, "Risco de Famara", "Volcán Soñador", "Verano en Guacimeta", "Mi vieja Molina" and "Viejo Arrecife" stood out.
The performance featured the special collaboration of José Manuel García Corujo, lead singer of the Los Campesinos Folk Group, whose outstanding performance captivated the audience. Teguey delivered a vibrant performance that conquered the attendees, who filled the capacity of the Torrelavega Society, applauding and humming the refrains, and asking for more at the end of the concert.
In addition to their music, Teguey presented the Torrelavega Society with a framed photograph and their album, gifts that were gratefully received by the president and vice president of the society. In gratitude, they surprised the group with the delivery of a commemorative plaque with the Torrelavega shield, designed by César Manrique.
The event was attended by the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jesús Machín Tavio, and the Deputy Mayor of the City Council of Arrecife, Echedey Eugenio. Both congratulated Concha Núñez for her magnificent works exhibited, the Teguey family for the excellent concert, and the Torrelavega Society for its outstanding cultural work during these 80 years, deserving of the Gold Medal of the Government of the Canary Islands 2025, support that both have unanimously supported in their respective corporations.
