Full Program

Organized by the Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the Island Council and under the artistic direction of Jorge Perdigón, the program of the 39th FIMC in Lanzarote will begin on Saturday, January 14 in Los Jameos del Agua with a concert by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the Japanese maestro Eiji Oue, "who has led some of the best orchestras in the world and who is recognized for his extraordinary interpretations and his characteristic good humor and great energy," they say from the Cabildo. They will perform works by Mendelssohn and Schumann, in a repertoire that will feature the Russian pianist Andrey Gugnin, "praised for his extraordinarily versatile and agile technique, and for being a passionate and virtuoso performer," they say.

The following day, Sunday 15, at the El Salinero Theater, the comic show 'Desconcerto' will be offered. It is in charge of an ensemble of fourteen string musicians who perform the so-called 'Humorous Music', in a project conceived by Jordi Purtí and Orthemis Orquestra, "highly applauded by the public and the press thanks to its freshness and sympathy on stage," they explain from the Cabildo. It proposes a meeting between music, theater, humor and the emotion of spectators of all ages and cultures. In this way, they manage to bring classical music closer to the general public, with virtuosity, imagination and laughter.

The program continues on Friday 20, at the San Bartolomé Theater with the Cuarteto Casals, National Music Award in 2006, one of the most interesting Spanish formations on the international scene. It is made up of violinists Abel Tomás and Vera Martínez, violist Jonathan Brown and cellist Arnau Tomás. Since its founding more than 25 years ago, they have received numerous awards and recognition from critics both for their performances and for their recording production. In this concert they will perform works by Haydn, Shostakovich and Schubert

The next event will be on Tuesday 24, at the Convento de Santo Domingo, in Teguise, with Gabrieli Consort, who will offer an a cappella program focused on music composed to the Virgin Mary from the 13th century to the present. It is worth highlighting the figure of its director, Paul McCreesh, "one of the most relevant masters of the very important choral school of the United Kingdom," says the Cabildo. The group is made up of "world-renowned performers" and has a large vocal and instrumental repertoire. One of its singularities is its commitment to recover little-known repertoires, recreate the original interpretations and create inspiring and stimulating performances. This concert will be free for the public, upon prior withdrawal of invitations on the website.

On Thursday 26, at the Municipal Theater of Tías, will be the show 'Consonancias', name that gives title to the union of two formations with solera of the Archipelago: Canary Guitar Quartet (Samuel Delgado, Luis Alejandro García, Tomás Fariña and Fran Yanes) and Timples y otras Pequeñas Guitarras del Mundo (Germán López, Althay Páez, Beselch Rodríguez, Yone Rodríguez and Leandro Ojeda). In total, more than fifty strings in the hands of nine performers that will transport the listener to music from different eras and styles: classical, jazz, folk and world music. "This show closes with the absolute premiere of a joint work composed for the occasion, with which it will be possible to verify that this family of instruments is more alive than ever, as well as the great level of these musicians," expresses the Cabildo.

The 39th FIMC will say goodbye at the El Salinero Theater on Friday, February 3 with baroque music. It will be from the hand of the charismatic formation El Afecto Ilustrado, directed by the Canarian violinist Adrián Linares. "The ensemble always presents programs of a high level of interpretative quality, historical precision and respect for the original sources, the result of a detailed process of musical and historical research," they say from the Cabildo. On this occasion it will be 'Selva d'amore', in which they propose a trip to the Neapolitan school of the 17th-18th centuries. The soprano Jone Martínez participates in this concert.
