The best of the week from June 19 to 25: cinema, music, literature, a dance festival and another television festival

The Meetings FesTVal begins, bringing the best of audiovisual production for television to the island. In addition, the International Festival of Movement Arts arrives in Arrecife.

This Thursday marks the beginning of the second edition of Meetings FesTVal Lanzarote 2025, which brings to the island the best of audiovisual production for television in Spain. In addition, the International Festival of Movement Arts arrives in Arrecife, filling La Plazuela with dance. 

There are also several cinematographic proposals, cultural workshops, the literary gathering verbena continues, and music reaches every corner of the island. 

 

TELEVISION

 

  • Meetings FesTVal Lanzarote 2025

Lanzarote becomes the stage for the best audiovisuals with the second edition of Meetings FesTVal Lanzarote 2025, an event organized by SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote and FesTVal, Television Festival. 

For three days, Arrecife will host talks, screenings, and meetings aimed at both professionals and the general public. 

When: From Thursday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. until Saturday, June 21. 

Where: Cines Atlántida, except for the talk with the Television Academy about 'Sports on the screen,' which is held at the Nautical Club.

CINEMA

  • Documentary “I crossed too”

Screening of the documentary 'I crossed too,' which narrates in first person the testimonies of Lamhir, Elhadji, and Pepe, three men who belong to three different generations and origins but are united by a territory: the Canary Islands.

 Lamhir and Elhadji arrived at the Archipelago in a small boat from Morocco and Senegal, while Pepe left Gran Canaria in 1950 for Venezuela - later Argentina - in a clandestine ship.

  • Buñuel Cinema. María la Portuguesa

The Buñuel Cinema of El Almacén presents María la Portuguesa, a documentary feature film that delves into the origin of Carlos Cano's most iconic song. 

After the screening, there will be a small discussion with Amaranta, daughter of Carlos Cano and co-star of the documentary, Eduardo Montero, director, and Ángel del Río, co-writer of the film.

With numerous awards, the documentary has been made by Intermedia Producciones, with the participation of Canal Sur TV and the collaboration of Carlos Cano Producciones and the José Saramago Foundation.

  • Buñuel Cinema. The Tutoring

The Buñuel Cinema of El Almacén presents The Tutoring, a disturbing reflection on a sexual assault between six-year-old children, treated from a dramatic perspective that expands towards the surreal. 

The director and screenwriter of this drama that reflects on our responsibility as a society towards childhood is Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, and he is the grandson of Ingmar Bergman.

DANCE

 

  • MOVE: Ephimera and Choreographic Center of La Gomera

The program in Arrecife starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday the 19th in La Plazuela with the artist Paloma Hurtado (Ephimera), followed by the Resident Company of the Choreographic Center of La Gomera, which will present Should they maybe.

  • MOVE: Cine-Dance.  DanzaTTack and Blas Payri.

 The first day of MOVE in Arrecife culminates at the Agustín de la Hoz House of Culture with an innovative cine-dance proposal by DanzaTTack and Blas Payri.

On Friday the 20th, starting at 6:30 p.m., the public will be able to enjoy Simulacro in La Plazuela, an impressive visual piece by Toni Aguilera, the poetic work Avec Ta’ Peau by EnbeDanza, Tun/La by Carmen Macías. 

Next, the international duo of Daria Koval and Maciej Kuźmiński, with Resistance Movement, a choreography that explores the limits of the body as a space of resistance, from 8:30 p.m.

  • MOVE: (In)Submises and EnbeDanza

On Saturday the 21st, the exhibition also closes in La Plazuela from 12 noon with (In)Submises, by Gisela de Paz and Sara Colomino, a proposal that addresses identity and feminism from movement.

 It will be followed at 6:30 p.m. by the double program of EnbeDanza with Días de sol y sombra, and the closing will be in charge of Flamencuría Obdulia Bustos, who will present La fragüera, a visceral reinterpretation of contemporary flamenco.

  • The vulnerable gaze. Contact Improvisation Workshop

The dancers Celeste Ayus and Johannes Hiltunen (Gran Canaria) will give a Contact Improvisation workshop, one of the best-known and most characteristic forms of postmodern dance, whose practice involves continuous physical contact between the dancers, where gravity, impulse, inertia, and friction shape their interactions.

LITERATURE

  • Verbena. Presentation of the poetry book “The edges”.

The journalist and writer Tayri Muñiz will talk with María Limón about her poetry book Los bordes, a work that traces with lyricism and forcefulness the tensions between the body, memory, and desire.

GASTRONOMY

 

  • Workshop. The prickly pear and its gastronomic uses

Participants will learn to remove thorns from cactus pads, as well as different cooking techniques and the nutritional values of this traditional food in Lanzarote.

  • FesTribute

This Friday marks the first edition of FesTribute. A music festival with the tribute bands Canalla, The RolyRocks, and Decandencia that will cover Extremoduro, Rolling Stones, and Héroes del Silencio.

  • Folklore Festival “Malpaís de la Corona” 2025

The Folklore Festival “Malpaís de la Corona” celebrates its twenty-first edition in 2025. In addition to a musical show, it is a living expression of traditional Canarian culture, of the intangible heritage that is transmitted from generation to generation, and of the social and community values that define the island identity.

  • CoolMoon Festival. Jonas Aponte. 

Musician, guitarist, singer, and Brazilian composer, Jonas Cruz has lived in Tenerife since 2016. Three years later, he changed his stage name to Jonas Aponte.

  • Canary Islands Gospel Choir

The Gospel School of the Canary Islands (EGC) offers a concert this Saturday. Founded in 2017 by the musician Ezequiel Barrios in Lanzarote, he later created a second group in Tenerife and a third in La Palma.
