The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Youth and Education areas, is organizing this week several sessions of the conference A Learning Journey, given by the coach Pedro García Aguado. The initiative, aimed at fostering the emotional development of more than 1,400 students from 4th year of ESO and 1st year of Bachillerato, aims to raise awareness among young people about their decision-making in conflict situations and prevent drug use.
The presentation of the event held this Monday morning in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo was attended by the president of the Island Corporation, Oswaldo Betancort; the Councilor for Youth, Aroa Revelo; the Councilor for Education, Ascensión Toledo, and the speaker Pedro García Aguado. The Island Councilor for Culture, Jesús Machín, was also among the public.
Oswaldo Betancort has highlighted that these conferences will serve to make young people more prepared, and have greater knowledge and capacity to react to make decisions in the future. “It is vital that Lanzarote has a mandatory calendar to transmit this type of skills that serve as a tool that seeks to achieve success in 21st century education.”
The island president also clarified that these talks “are framed in the citizen happiness strategy that the Cabildo that I preside over wants to implement in Lanzarote and La Graciosa. And for that we need committed young people who have the necessary tools to overcome moments of frustration that may arise. With this type of teaching we try to provide them - and their families - with some guidelines to overcome”, he assured.
For her part, Councilor Aroa Revelo explained that more and more young people, unfortunately, have easier access to this type of harmful substances, and alcohol. “We have to continue providing the necessary tools from the Administration so that they know how to face realities”, she stressed.
And in this sense, Ascensión Toledo, stated that “the Department of Education reinforces this firm and determined commitment to face a problem that not only affects the young population”. She also added that “the Island Institution implements policies so that citizens do not have to face this conflict alone”.
Decisions towards maturity
The expert Pedro Aguado commented on how during these sessions “young people are interested in situations that are close to them, when we talk especially about legal or illegal drugs... They ask things like, hey, I have a friend, and how should I do to help him. And they leave very sensitized when it comes to helping others”.
“From learning, which is what I want to transmit, examples of experience can be given to boys and girls, with the aim of helping them make decisions. We have all had that process of maturation and growth, and at these ages it is very important to make good decisions”, said coach Pedro Aguado.
The first session of this series of talks brought together more than 400 students this morning in the assembly hall of the Cabildo. They, all students of the 4th year of ESO and 1st of Bachillerato, were able to learn about the experiences of this professional, both in the sports field and in his personal life.
The next talks will take place in the same place this Tuesday, January 21, and next Wednesday, January 22, at 11:30 am. The Cabildo of Lanzarote reinforces its commitment to offer a quality education, where youth are participants and knowledgeable about key aspects in their emotional development.
Pedro Aguado starred in the program Hermano Mayor, where he helped young people to reintegrate socially. In addition, he was participating in the Survivor program.
