Two and a half years ago, Souffiane D. was arrested as the alleged co-author of a homicide against Juan V. in a drug den in Arrecife, after recordings from two establishments and statements from several witnesses placed him next to Rubén H. M. on the afternoon of March 1, 2022. The victim's brother, who witnessed the confrontation, identified him in a lineup and again in the trial held this week in the Second Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas. However, the jury has given little credibility to his testimony due to a series of contradictions and has acquitted Souffiane of the charges against him, attributing all responsibility to Rubén H. M.
Looking at the ceiling, a shy thank you, and a hug to the other defendant. It was his reaction after Judge Nicolás Acosta informed him that he was now a free man and that he could return to prison to collect his belongings and leave behind the pre-trial detention he has been in since March 4, 2022. According to his version, which the jury's verdict has given credibility to, he was only accompanying his childhood friend to buy drugs, but the only time he left the car was to smoke a cigarette. Assisted by his lawyer Aránzazu González, he stated that he did not see anything or know the residents of the house.
The jury unanimously declared it proven that the two defendants arrived by car at the home in the Maneje neighborhood, which operated as a drug den, around 9:30 p.m. From there, it considers that it was Rubén H. M. who knocked on the door of the house to force entry and started an argument with the brothers Juan and Benjamín V. In the course of it, according to the verdict, he gave Juan a stab in the middle of his left side, which penetrated the thoracic cavity, reaching the left lung, the pericardium, and the cardiac viscera.
