The driver who fatally ran over two people in February 2016 in Costa Teguise has accepted a settlement agreement, by which she will be sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in prison.
The trial was to be held this Tuesday before the Criminal Court Number 3 of Arrecife, but finally it was not necessary to continue with the hearing, after the confession of the accused.
She acknowledged two crimes of manslaughter due to gross negligence, since that night she was driving under the influence of alcohol.
In addition to the prison sentence, her driving license will be withdrawn for 4 years and 9 months. Once that period has elapsed, she must obtain the permit again, which will lose its validity.
The victims were crossing at a pedestrian crossing
The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. at a pedestrian crossing on Avenida de Las Palmeras.
A man and a woman in their 70s of Dutch nationality were crossing the street when they were run over by this young woman, who is Italian but resides on the island.
After the accident, the Local Police of Teguise subjected the driver to a breathalyzer test, in which she tested positive.
As a result of the accident, the man died at the scene, without the medical personnel being able to do anything for his life. The woman was seriously injured when the paramedics arrived and ended up dying shortly after, upon arrival at the hospital.
The family of the victims was present at the trial as a private prosecution, and also accepted the agreement. It included the claim for financial compensation, for which they had already reached an agreement with the insurance company.
