The defendant accused of trying to introduce 1,117.5 grams of cocaine on the island has acknowledged the facts before the First Section of the Provincial Court, after reaching a settlement agreement with the Prosecutor's Office, by which he has accepted a three-year prison sentence. Thus, the trial has not been held and a sentence will be issued with the penalty accepted by the defendant.
Initially, the Public Prosecutor's Office requested a five-year prison sentence for S.A.U. but, with the agreement reached, this has been reduced by two years.
In addition, the defendant must face the payment of a fine of 202,601.63 euros that the Prosecutor's Office also claimed and whose amount has not been corrected.
The events took place on October 12, 2020, when the defendant arrived on the island on a Ryanair flight from Brussels, "with the purpose of introducing toxic drugs into the illicit market for subsequent sale and distribution." Specifically, he was carrying "a total of 75 plastic wrappers" inside his body with the drug, which had "a purity of 46.27%". The same, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office in its indictment, would have reached a "value of 67,533.88 euros" in the illicit market.
After being arrested at the airport, the defendant was placed in pre-trial detention, where he has been for eleven months, time that will now be deducted from the sentence.
