Sentenced to sixteen months in prison for beating a cat to death in the Canary Islands

The prison sentence has been suspended until the judgment enforcement phase, while the accused is credited with the time served in prison within the framework of this case.

The Court number 1 of the Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in Gran Canaria, has convicted in a swift trial a man who killed a cat on August 30, 2025, in the municipality of Mogán, in the south of the island. 

The judicial ruling, which was read in voce, states that the convicted person is "criminally responsible" for having ended the life of this animal.

The events took place around 6:00 PM, when the convicted person was walking through the common areas of a tourist complex in Puerto Rico (Mogán). According to the proven facts of the sentence, upon encountering Milú, the cat, he began to hit it repeatedly on the head with a bunch of keys. The cat died instantly due to a hemorrhage. 

The man has been sentenced to sixteen months in prison for a crime of animal cruelty, following the agreement reached between the Public Prosecutor's Office and his lawyer. Thus, the prison sentence has been suspended until the execution phase of the sentence, while the accused is credited with the time in prison he served within this case. 

To which are added two years and eight months of disqualification from exercising any profession, trade, or business related to animals, as well as from owning animals. He must also compensate the community of owners with 77 euros for the cost of the necropsy performed on the animal.
