The Civil Guard, through the SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service) team of Vecindario, has arrested a person as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against animals. The events occurred on August 30, 2025, in a residential area of the municipality of Mogán (Las Palmas) and the victim was a stray cat of about seven or eight years old, known by the neighbors as Millu.

Millu was part of a feline colony that had been settled in the area for several years. She was a calm cat, used to living with people and trusting in their presence, which unfortunately
led to the fatal encounter with her aggressor. The complaint filed by a citizen launched a thorough investigation by the SEPRONA, which clarified what happened thanks to the analysis of the complex's video surveillance images.

The recordings show how the detainee approaches the cat with a bunch of keys in his hand. Before attacking it, he turns his head, probably to make sure he is not seen, and then hits the animal with the keys, causing a hemorrhage that ended its life. The images also harshly reflect the extreme suffering that the animal endured for almost a minute before dying, while its aggressor merely watched it without providing any assistance.

The SEPRONA Unit of Vecindario has carried out a meticulous and decisive work, collecting and analyzing the evidence that has made it possible to demonstrate the intentionality of the violent act. This regrettable event highlights the importance of promoting respect and empathy towards animals, beings that Spanish legislation, after the reform of Law 17/2021, recognizes since January 2022 as sentient beings, capable of experiencing pain and well-being.

Gratuitous cruelty, like that shown in this case, must be rejected by the entire society and sanctioned in accordance with the current legal framework. The report drawn up by the Civil Guard emphasizes that protecting animals is an ethical and civic matter, a responsibility shared by all citizens.

The proceedings have been sent to the Duty Court of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and to the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Las Palmas, accompanied by the necessary evidence for the criminal prosecution of the crime.
