A jury of the Las Palmas Court will try next week a cook, Federico Antonio E.M., 62 years old, who in August 2019 allegedly slit the throat of the restaurant owner with a knife in which he worked in Puerto del Carmen, in Lanzarote, and who is accused of a crime of murder.
According to the prosecution's indictment, the defendant faces a sentence of 19 years and six months in prison due to the mitigating circumstance of anomaly or mental alteration, since he suffered from borderline personality disorder and depressive syndrome, as well as the payment of compensation of 100,000 euros to the widow and three children of the victim.
The Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that the events occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on August 1, 2019, when the owner was carrying out cleaning work prior to the opening of the restaurant and was attacked by surprise from behind by the accused, who grabbed him by the head with his left hand and with his right hand caused a deep cut in the neck with a 23-centimeter blade knife.
Although the owner of the premises managed to break free and go out into the street, the accused chased him and at the height of an alley, without possibility of defense, and already injured, he dealt him a second stab in the neck in the form of a degüello, which caused his death, the indictment states.
The defendant is in a situation of provisional imprisonment for this cause.
The trial is scheduled to begin next Monday, after the selection of the jury, and is expected to last until Thursday.
