The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, has been convicted after causing an accident and testing positive for a breathalyzer test. The events occurred last Tuesday, although Machín had not wanted to speak until now, despite the fact that La Voz has been trying to confirm what happened and find out his version since that day.

Finally, this Friday he sent a brief statement in which he asks for "forgiveness" for what happened. "I feel deeply saddened by an error in judgment that I assume with all the administrative consequences that it entails, as well as personal and family ones," says the mayor of Coalición Canaria, who has not given details about the events or the judicial process they have had.

However, according to other sources to La Voz, a quick trial was going to be held the next day, and Machín decided to accept a settlement agreement with the Prosecutor's Office. "I didn't want to go to trial," he has limited himself to pointing out in this regard when consulted by this medium.

In his statement, he does not even refer to that passage through the Courts or the positive breathalyzer test, although it is implicit in his words. "I was given the option to appeal, but I am not going to do so, even having a negative blood test that was done to me at the Doctor José Molina Orosa hospital, when I was transferred by the ambulance," he says. Jesús Machín would thus refer to a second test that would have been done to him at this health center, to which he apparently had to be referred after the accident.

In any case, he himself adds that he does not intend to "justify himself" and that he assumes his mistake. "I was wrong, and I apologize to all my neighbors, to my party colleagues and, of course, to my family who, as always, is my greatest support. It is not time to hang my head and I am not going to do it because I believe that when a mistake is made, there is no point in hiding," he adds, assuring that he is "totally and sincerely sorry."

"Like any other citizen, I will comply with the sanction that has been imposed on me," he adds, without specifying what that sanction has been, which would imply at least a temporary withdrawal of the license and a possible financial fine.

"I can only apologize a thousand and one times and assure that what happened this Tuesday is an isolated event that will never happen again. In my more than 30 years as a public official, my conduct has been impeccable," defends the mayor of Tinajo, who concludes by giving "thanks to each and every one of the people who have worried" about his state of health.

Machín, who also did not want to answer questions from La Voz this Friday, alleging that he will do so later, has insisted on referring to that test that was done to him at the hospital, although he did not want to confirm or deny the result that the previous test showed, which had to exist for the case to reach the Courts. "I have never in my life tried any type of drugs. Except when I have had a wine or a beer," he has limited himself to pointing out. In addition, he has indicated that this same Friday he has been summoned to a meeting of the Standing Committee of the party, to explain what happened. It should be remembered that the general secretary of CC on the island is his daughter, Migdalia Machín.
