CCOO Education Canarias denounces the "chaotic management" of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands in teaching appointments and demands that it comply with the planning agreed upon in the Technical Committee held at the end of August in the Directorate General of Personnel.
From the CCOO Education Federation, they recall that at that meeting, at the proposal of the Ministry itself, a calendar was approved for the organization of vacant positions and substitutions for the entire 2026-2027 academic year, "so the situation is especially worrying as it is the Administration itself that is breaching what was agreed".
CCOO Education Canarias explains that it is receiving an "avalanche of complaints and requests for information due to the confusion generated by the Ministry" in the appointments of these first days of the course. "An example of this is that appointments have been made, first, until December of this year and, two days later, until June 2027, in such a way that the Directorate General of Personnel harms those who have the most rights," it explains.
The union organization considers the management that the Ministry is developing to be "incomprehensible" and demands that it clarify whether those positions were already available when the first appointments were made, while asking it to immediately reassign all those people who have seen their rights diminished. At this point, it emphasizes the "serious consequences" that this situation is causing for interim teachers, "not only professionally, but also in the economic and personal spheres."
The Ministry's failure to update non-availability requests is another of the main problems with which the new academic year begins. "It is unacceptable that appointments of people who had already formalized their non-availability are being made. In that situation, the center is waiting for someone who is not going to join and thus the arrival of another teacher is delayed, which harms those who are already incorporated, overloading them with work to be able to properly attend to the students."
On the other hand, CCOO denounces the "failed appointments" that are occurring, "something that, in a territory like the Canary Islands, implies a series of added difficulties as a consequence of travel". It indicates that, in these cases, the appointed individuals "find, upon arriving at the center, that that vacancy no longer exists, losing appointment days that will not be replaced by the Administration, in addition to travel expenses, accommodation, and consequences for work-life balance".
CCOO Canarias demands that this entire situation be resolved imminently, with the Canary Islands Government guaranteeing maximum transparency and restoring the rights of all affected teachers. "The Ministry must respect the order of the lists and the schools need to complete their staff as soon as possible," emphasizes the union organization, which insists that administrative errors "cannot continue to punish teachers, schools, and students."
