The number of tourists from national airports continues to skyrocket in Lanzarote in May, with 51,939 travelers compared to the 34,499 registered before the pandemic, which represents an increase of 17,440 people, according to a report by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
These figures show a total recovery of this market, in a month that always tends to be low, since it does not coincide with the Easter holiday period and not with the summer campaign. However, it is important to mention that it experiences a decrease of 5.2% if compared to April, when 54,794 travelers from national airports arrived, the month in which the peak of 2022 was marked.
Regarding international passengers, these are decreasing again and, furthermore, remain below the numbers of 2019. Specifically, in May 189,771 passengers arrived from foreign airports, compared to 216,328 in April, which is 12.3% less. Also, the number of passengers is 3,986 people short of reaching the 193,757 travelers of the year prior to the coronavirus.
However, if the data from 2021 is taken into account, the growth is exponential in both audiences, of 1060.2% in terms of international travelers and 122% in national travelers, since last year only 16,357 and 23,394 passengers were registered, respectively.
For now, the accumulated number for 2022 is 920,539 travelers from foreign airports, compared to 45,919 in 2021, 1,904.7% more, and 222,236 for national passengers, compared to 39,506 in 2021, 462.5% more.
In any case, it is expected that the figures will rise again in the months of July and August coinciding with the summer campaign, for which air connections have already been increased, with the intention of reaching the expected recovery.
