The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, conveys to the island's town councils the need to reinforce the taxi service during the months of highest tourist influx, especially in the main tourist centers and points of high visitor concentration, with the aim of "guaranteeing adequate mobility for both tourists and residents".
The island institution expresses its "concern" about the incidents that have been recorded in various municipalities, with long waits to access a taxi at certain times of the day. This situation generates discomfort among citizens, affects daily mobility, and harms the destination's image.
The long queues of users registered in recent days at Marina Rubicón, in Playa Blanca, reflect a problem that is beginning to intensify in different tourist areas of the island during a period characterized by increased demand.
From the Cabildo and SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, they request that the town councils, within their competencies, study and adopt measures that allow for an increase in the service's response capacity during the high season.
Among these measures, the granting of temporary monthly licenses is specifically proposed, a formula that has legal backing and would allow for the punctual incorporation of new vehicles and professionals to meet periods of high demand, such as the current summer period, without necessarily implying a permanent modification of the number of municipal licenses.
The island institution considers that "this tool can offer an agile and proportionate response to extraordinary or seasonal situations, especially in those municipalities where there are punctual concentrations of users in ports, hotel areas, commercial areas, leisure areas, and other tourist enclaves".
Along with the issuance of these monthly licenses, the Cabildo and SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote propose the optimization of available resources and the adoption of any other formula that contributes to improving the coordination, availability, and provision of the service.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, points out that "we are aware of the effort that the taxi sector is making to meet a very high demand during these months, but it is necessary that, from the competent administrations, the necessary measures are adopted to respond to a reality that affects both those who visit us and those who live on the island".
Betancort adds that "the town councils have formulas that allow for the temporary increase of the service's capacity at specific times of special need. Therefore, we ask that their immediate application during the summer be studied, always from dialogue with the sector and taking into account the circumstances of each municipality".
For his part, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, recalls that "mobility is part of the tourist experience. When a visitor has to wait for long periods to travel from a marina, a commercial area, or a tourist accommodation, the perception of the destination suffers. Similarly, this situation directly affects the quality of life of residents".
The island institution reiterates its 2readiness to collaborate with municipal administrations and the taxi sector to move forward with solutions that allow for a public transport service adapted to the current needs of Lanzarote, preserving the quality of the destination and guaranteeing adequate attention to both visitors and residents".
