In March, Lanzarote received more French, Dutch and Italian tourists than before the outbreak of the pandemic, according to a report from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) collected by the Lanzarote Data Center. British and Germans, despite being the main issuing countries, have not yet reached the figures of 2019.

Italian tourists are the most striking case, as they practically double their figures, with the entry of 10,361 travelers from Italy in March, compared to 5,945 in the same month of 2019.

France also improves the data with the arrival of 15,573 tourists to Lanzarote (12,344 in 2019) and an interannual increase of 485%. For their part, the Dutch follow that line with 18,084 tourists (12,344 in 2019) and an increase of 8,721% compared to 2021.

However, German, Belgian, Irish, Nordic and English tourists are still somewhat reluctant to visit Lanzarote again.

Germans, Belgians, Irish, Nordics and English come less

In the case of Germany, only 32,637 tourists arrived on the island in March, 447% more than last year, but 24,168 fewer foreigners than in 2019, when a total of 56,805 entered.

The gap in Ireland is also remarkable, since last March only 5,890 Belgian tourists came, compared to 23,765 in the same month in 2019. However, the figures improve by 869% year-on-year.

For their part, the Nordic countries are still well below pre-pandemic figures. In March, 8,253 tourists from Nordic countries arrived in Lanzarote, 5,832 less than in 2019.

Along those lines, the English are the ones who experience the greatest increase in March compared to 2021, remaining below pre-pandemic levels. In particular, 108,708 travelers from the United Kingdom arrived in the third month of the year, compared to 127,918 in 2019.

Belgium is on the verge of the expected recovery, with 3,414 tourists, as opposed to the 4,499 Belgians who entered Lanzarote in 2019. However, it increases by 4,921% year-on-year.

Finally, 10,571 travelers come from other countries, 672% more year-on-year, but 4,656 less than before the coronavirus crisis.

The figures are getting closer to total recovery

It should be noted that the number of foreign tourists arriving in Lanzarote has not yet managed to reach pre-pandemic numbers, although they are getting closer.

Specifically, in March, 213,491 tourists from other countries arrived on the island, which is 57,614 fewer foreigners than in 2019, when 271,105 entered.

However, if the 2021 data is taken into account, the increase is exponential, of 1,739%, since last year on those dates many travel restrictions due to the coronavirus were still in force.
