Puerto del Carmen became this Friday, October 2, 2026, the nerve center of the debate on the future of work in the tourism industry with the celebration of the Ekonomus Conference 'Tourism and Employment: Reinventing to survive'.

Co-organized by the City Council of Tías and Lanzarote Media, with the sponsorship of the Art Centers, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote and the collaboration of GEHOCAN, the event concluded with a resounding success in attendance and a high level of shared reflections in the Sala El Fondeadero of the coastal town.

As part of the commemorations for the 60th anniversary of Puerto del Carmen as a pioneering destination, the event directly addressed the most critical and urgent challenges affecting hotels, restaurants, and service companies in the archipelago.

The session began with the intervention of Eugenia Soriano, headhunter and expert in personnel selection, who offered a precise diagnosis of the labor market in the Canary Islands and presented the keys to retaining talent from a technical and human approach.

For her part, business trainer and speaker Javier Ondarra provided strategic tools and ideas to combat work absenteeism and reinforce team commitment within new social dynamics.

The technical panel was completed with the contribution of Sonia Martínez Alcalá, president of GEHOCAN and HR Director, who detailed how to transform hotel environments into more sustainable, efficient, and attractive workplaces.

Likewise, the conference reserved a very useful space for young people and professionals in the sector, addressing the impact of algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on selection processes and the development of future professional careers.

With this open and free debate forum, the Ekonomus Conference consolidates itself as an essential event for the Canarian business fabric, offering key guidelines to guarantee the competitiveness, long-term viability, and service excellence of the islands' main economic engine.
