Ikea has entered the hotel sector of the archipelago with the opening of its first establishment in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
And it has done so in the most discreet way possible. Through the company Sarton Canarias, its instrumental company in the archipelago and without a press release.
In fact, the hotel, which is called Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House, has no trace of Ikea's corporate image.
Until now, Ikea only had one hotel in the Swedish city where the furniture multinational was born, Älmhult. It was built 60 years ago and, contrary to the experience in the Canary Islands, all its aesthetics, furniture and atmosphere refer to Ikea.
Ikea's hotel establishment in Gran Canaria stands on a 1967 mansion located at Calle Maestro Valle 7, has two stars and is located very close to Las Alcaraveras Beach. It consists of 20 rooms and has an outdoor pool, garden and terrace. Rooms for two can be booked from 120 euros.
According to the newspaper La Provincia, this is not the first time that Ikea has shown interest in sectors other than furniture, as it has experimented with projects of modular homes, tourist apartments and coliving in Palma de Mallorca and other places.
Everything seems to indicate that the Swedish multinational is checking if a new model of urban hospitality with small, comfortable and affordable boutique hotels can be successful.
In fact, the second Ikea hotel in the Canary Islands, whose name will be Las Vegas de Ciudad Jardín Suites, will also be in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It will be built on two adjoining villas, one at Calle Brasil 15; and the other at Calle Fortuny 3.
