70-year-old British man Leslie Green died in the hospital on November 4, 2024 after contracting salmonella from eating undercooked chicken at an all-inclusive hotel in the Canary Islands. This has been proven by a judicial investigation, according to the BBC, which revealed that Green and his wife, Julie, from the English city of Bolton, near Manchester, had been on vacation with Jet2 in Fuerteventura and had only eaten at the Barceló Occidental Jandía Playa resort, where they were staying.

In a statement, Jet2 stated that it would be inappropriate to comment due to ongoing legal proceedings, but offered its condolences to the Green family. The BBC has also contacted Barceló for their view, but has not yet received a response.

Leslie Green told the BBC that life would "never be the same again" after her husband's death, but that she hoped that by speaking out, she could warn others about the dangers of salmonella.

The retired nurse also became ill a few days after her husband and spent a week hospitalized on the island.

The BBC reports that, according to his statement before the competent Coroner's Court in his country, her husband began to experience symptoms, including diarrhea, on October 9, 2024, nine days after the couple's arrival in the Canary Islands.

The man became dehydrated and was examined by the resort's doctor on October 12, who sent him to a local clinic to be given fluids. However, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the hospital the following day.

He had to be induced into a coma after suffering from sepsis, but the doctors said that nothing more could be done for him. The couple's daughter, Becci, 35, flew in to be with her father and was present when the decision was made to take him off life support.

The coroner concluded that Green had died of food poisoning contracted during a vacation after eating undercooked chicken.
