The name of César Manrique will fly from this Monday printed on a Boeing 737 aircraft. This was announced by the airline Air Europa in a press release after an event held at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The objective of this initiative, agreed between the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the company, is to promote the island as a tourist destination.

The CEO of Air Europa, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, accompanied by the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and other authorities of the island, such as the CEO of the Society for the Promotion of Foreign Affairs of Lanzarote, Héctor Hernández; the representative of tourist promotion of Turismo Lanzarote, Marcos Medina; the president of the César Manrique Foundation, José Juan Ramírez, and the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, José Valle Martínez, participated in the act of homage to the artistic icon of Lanzarote. On behalf of Air Europa, the Marketing Director, Rafael Brull, was also present.

Within the framework of this proposal, connectivity between Lanzarote and the peninsula will be increased by 15%, the equivalent of 15,500 more seats than in the past year.

"The naming of this aircraft is part of the actions that the company will carry out to promote the easternmost of the Canary Islands," the company continued in a note.

The air division of Globalia maintains 644 flights between this island and the Peninsula, with an offer of almost 120,000 seats throughout 2023. Also, from next June and throughout the summer season, Air Europa will connect Lanzarote with Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela, respectively.

The new route between Lanzarote and Barcelona will be inaugurated on June 26 and will operate two weekly frequencies, specifically on Mondays and Fridays. Two days later, the connection between Lanzarote and Santiago de Compostela will be opened and will maintain a weekly frequency throughout the summer, on Wednesdays.

In addition to all this, there is the route between Lanzarote and Bilbao, which will maintain the current three weekly frequencies, and the route between Lanzarote and Madrid which, from mid-June, will double the frequencies from two to four a week.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote thanked the airline for increasing connectivity between the Peninsula and Lanzarote and said that César Manrique "is the most important figure in the recent history of Lanzarote." She also stressed: "His work and his thinking are still very valid and are of such magnitude that it is not possible to understand Lanzarote without his contributions, so it is a source of inspiration to face the challenges that the island has ahead."

"We are very happy to celebrate a day like today in which the name of Air Europa will be linked to that of César Manrique," said Jesús Nuño de la Rosa. "We feel very identified with the environmental values that the artist always displayed. Proof of this is our constant struggle for the future of decarbonization, the commitment to a sustainable fleet and efficiency in each of our processes."

For the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, José Valle, this naming has "a great significance for the island and for the artist himself. The plane will carry his name through the skies of the whole world representing Lanzarote" and, in this sense, he is very grateful to the Cabildo for having accepted the proposal and to the César Manrique Foundation for its collaboration.
