The Hotel Rural Los Lirios, located in the town of Tías, has won one of the main awards at the European Sustainable Tourism Awards «GrINN Awards 2022», that of the Best Sustainable Accommodation in Spain category.
The organizers of the event have announced the winners of the 50 categories this Wednesday from the World Travel Market in London, one of the most important tourism fairs in the world.
The mayor of the town, José Juan Cruz Saavedra has congratulated the hotel and all its team Tías, and all its team, for “the magnificent work they do” and considers “an honor” to have such relevant hotel establishments in terms of environmental sustainability as the Hotel Rural Los Lirios”.
Local stone, wood and lime
The hotel is located in a 17th century house considered a protected heritage asset by the Government of the Canary Islands. It is a ground floor house built with local stone, wood and lime, biodegradable materials that are very effective in isolating the facilities from humidity and heat. Its owners, Antonio Castillo and Maricruz Guerrero, opened the hotel in July 2019.
The main structure, walls, central courtyard, wooden floors, some stone pavements and the era are preserved intact from the original construction. It also preserves many unique elements such as the still in the main courtyard, the volcanic stone pile, niches, cupboards and openings.
The owners explained that they have their own photovoltaic plant for self-consumption and water and energy saving systems. They also have a system for the elimination of single-use plastic containers and use local products and suppliers, among other green initiatives.
Organized by the British hotel group Quartz Inn Hotels, -the first European hotel chain made up of independent and sustainable establishments- the GrINN Awards 2022 recognize excellence in European sustainable tourism.
In this edition, hundreds of accommodations, companies and tourism leaders from 28 European countries have participated in its 50 categories.
