The workers of the Selective Collection service of Lanzarote, managed by Urbaser S.A., have announced the start of mobilizations and a possible strike after more than 20 months of unsuccessful negotiation for the new collective agreement.
The union representation denounces that the company and the Cabildo of Lanzarote intend to modify the working day to provide service from Monday to Saturday —eliminating the acquired right to work from Monday to Friday—, while keeping salaries frozen since 2024.
From the social side, it is considered especially serious that this proposal is put forward in the final phase of the process, violating the principle of good faith in negotiation.
According to CCOO, currently, a driver receives about 1,250 euros net per month and a laborer around 1,014 euros, precarious salary conditions that the staff demands to update. The indignation is such that the workers themselves describe the situation as "a joke that they continue to beat around the bush, in order to not sign a collective agreement that improves our labor rights".
To the dispute over working hours and salaries, the disagreement over article 9 of the agreement is added. Despite the Cabildo committing in assembly to draft the text without ambiguous expressions that could cast doubt on the collection of supplements, CCOO denounces that the company maintains these add-ons in the final proposal, generating profound defenselessness.
Faced with this scenario, the workers' assembly has unanimously agreed to initiate public demonstrations and study possible breaches of the tender specifications by Urbaser. If there is no immediate rectification by the company and the island corporation in the coming days, the staff will formalize the call for a strike, insisting that they "will go on strike if this situation is not resolved in the coming days" to avoid losing already recognized rights.
