The regional committee of the UGT of the Canary Islands met this Thursday to, among other issues, seek a joint position on the concept of sustainable tourism, said the general secretary of this union, Manuel Navarro.

Navarro has referred to the proposal of the CEOE that the minimum interprofessional salary increase by 3% in 2023 and the same percentage in 2025, and has stated in this regard that in reality this approach is what employers and unions have signed in the collective bargaining. Navarro believes that the minimum interprofessional salary should increase by around 12%.

Before the meeting of the regional committee of the UGT of the Canary Islands, Navarro referred to the fact that in the Canary archipelago there is a very large demographic burden, which also affects its resources, and hence the convenience of reaching a position on sustainable tourism.

The general secretary of the UGT of the Canary Islands has also spoken about the situation of workers in the tourism sector, in which provincial agreements are complied with, although he has pointed out that they are precarious, especially that of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The general secretary has stressed that the biggest problem of the services sector and the hotel industry lies in the fact that they are the ones with the lowest investment in salaries and labor costs.

He has stressed that the Canary Islands occupies the second place in the worst working conditions and lowest salaries, and has criticized that labor absenteeism is accused of being the cause of the low productivity in the autonomous community.

Navarro commented that Euskadi occupies the first place in low productivity and, however, is the autonomous community with the best working and salary conditions, with which "the excuse that absenteeism is the cause of low productivity falls away".
