Lanzarote, the only island where unemployment increased in May

Lanzarote accumulates three consecutive months with increases in unemployment. In May, this growth was mainly due to the fall in female employment and the significant loss of employment in Yaiza.

Unemployment rose in April in Lanzarote by 0.6% compared to the previous month, which means 38 more people on the island's unemployment lists, reaching a total of 6,829 unemployed people, according to data provided by the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (Obecan).

Meanwhile, the rest of the islands experienced decreases in unemployment: Gran Canaria (-0.7%), Tenerife (-0.4%), Fuerteventura (-0.1%), La Gomera (-9.3%), El Hierro (-3.4%), and in La Palma there were no changes, employment remained the same as the previous month. 

Thus, Lanzarote has accumulated three consecutive months with increases in unemployment after the number of unemployed also grew in March (0.4%) and April  (0.2%). 

The increase in unemployment in April in Lanzarote was due to the loss of female employment across the island, which fell by 1.2%, while male employment grew by 0.3%. 

By municipalities, there were significant differences. Unemployment increased particularly in Yaiza, where it rose by 5.2%, meaning 27 more people on the municipality's unemployment lists, reaching a total of 551 unemployed.

Unemployment also grew in Tinajo (1.7%) to a total of 243 unemployed; in San Bartolomé (1.5%) to a total of 815 unemployed, and Arrecife, where it increased by 0.2% to 3,480. 

However, unemployment decreased in Teguise by 1% to 794 unemployed, in Haría it was 0.8% to 257 unemployed, and in Tías the drop was 0.1%, bringing its total unemployed to 689 people.
