The Government of the Canary Islands has opened the public information period for the draft Canary Islands Coastal Law, so that citizens, public administrations, and interested entities can submit contributions before its processing continues.

The period will remain open from October 29 to November 29, 2026, the Government reports in a statement.

The documentation of the draft bill and the information necessary to participate in this procedure are available on the Citizen Participation portal of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The proposal provides for a regulation adapted to the characteristics of the archipelago's coastline, taking into account its island condition and the environmental, social, and economic importance of the coast, the note indicates.

The text seeks to reconcile the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity with the public use of the coastline and the development of activities linked to this space.

The draft bill also incorporates measures related to climate change adaptation, coastal water quality, and the protection of marine natural spaces.

Another aspect it addresses is the specific treatment of traditional coastal settlements, considering their characteristics and their historical connection with the coast.

The Directorate General for Coasts and Management of the Canary Maritime Space will hold a new meeting next week with the Commission of Those Affected by the Coastal Law. It will also hold meetings with the FECAM and the FECAI, with the aim of addressing issues related to the draft bill and learning about the contributions of local and island entities.

By opening the public information period and holding these meetings, the Government of the Canary Islands has made the text available to citizens and administrations to gather observations and contributions during this phase of its processing.
