Sales of used cars and SUVs in the Canary Islands rose by 0.5% in the first quarter, registering a total of 20,770 units, compared to an increase of 3.4% in the national average, according to data from the employers' associations Faconauto (dealers) and Ganvam (official and independent distributors).

An increase that was more evident last March, when 5.5% more used vehicles were sold in the Canary Islands compared to the same month in 2022, according to a recent publication by the National Association of Vehicle Dealers (Ancove).

The analysis by Faconauto and Gavnam determines that the increase in sales at the national level is mainly due to the growth of operations with used vehicles from rental fleets.

Specifically, rental cars increased their sales of used vehicles by 144.8% in March, reaching 10,002 units. So far this year, they have accumulated an increase of 76.6%, with a total of 31,472 operations.

The data provided by the employers' associations show how the bulk of operations continues to be concentrated in models over 15 years old, which accounted for 38.9% of sales at the end of the first quarter, representing a volume of 182,258 units.

Regarding energy sources, operations with used diesel vehicles - which accounted for 55.9% of operations until March - maintain the downward trend of previous months and contracted by 2.1% in the first quarter.

Gasoline vehicles, in contrast, increased by 6.8% so far this year, with a total of 173,976 units sold.

For their part, operations with second-hand pure electric cars remained low, with a decrease of almost 12% compared to the first quarter of last year, reaching 2,611 units sold, which represents 0.6% of the total market.

In their case, sales of used plug-in hybrid/gasoline vehicles rose by 34.1% so far this year, reaching 3,626 units.

On the contrary, second-hand plug-in diesel/electric vehicles plummeted by 65.8% until March, with 198 units sold. E
