Unemployment decreased by 406 people in Lanzarote during the month of May, although there are still 2,626 more unemployed than a year ago.
Specifically, according to data from the Canarian Employment Observatory, the island closed last month with 19,497 unemployed compared to 16,871 in May 2020, which represents 15.5% more. However, in April of this year there were 19,903 unemployed, so a decrease of 2% is recorded in the monthly comparison.
In addition, unemployment has decreased in all the municipalities of the island, with the largest decrease being recorded in Arrecife, which ended May with 10,009 unemployed, 156 less than the previous month. For its part, Haría closed last month with 526 unemployed, 17 less than in April; and San Bartolomé did so with 2,082, 64 less.
In Teguise, unemployment has decreased by 48 people, ending May with 1,878 unemployed, while Tías had 2,236 unemployed, 39 less than the previous month. Finally, Tinajo closed May with 625 unemployed, 18 less than in April; and Yaiza did so with 2,141, 63 less than it had a month before.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, May ended with 277,417 unemployed, 5,106 less than the previous month, which represents a decrease of 1.81%. However, in the year-on-year comparison there is also an increase, specifically of 16,343 unemployed, or what is the same, 6.26%.
As for Spain as a whole, unemployment fell by 129,378 people in the month of May (3.3%), being the largest monthly reduction in the historical series. In addition, in this case, in year-on-year terms compared to May 2020, there are 76,526 fewer unemployed people, which represents a decrease of 1.28%.
