The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands will allocate 9 million euros from the EU Next Generation Funds for the installation of solar photovoltaic energy on building roofs, parking lots, greenhouses or reservoirs on the islands.

The Deputy Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Energy of the Canary Islands Government, Julieta Schallenberg, has reported this item on the occasion of her intervention in the seventh Self-Consumption and Sustainability Forum of the Atlantic held in Lanzarote, in which she presented the Ministry's strategy in the field of renewable energies.

'The Canary potential of photovoltaics in anthropized areas', was the name of the presentation given by Schallenberg, who referred to its use to generate photovoltaic energy and other renewable sources because they are spaces with a previous use, so they will be given preference over the use of new land, the Ministry reported in a statement.

The Deputy Minister has reported that a map of anthropized areas of the Canary Islands will be published on the website of the public company Grafcan, so that this information is accessible to promoters, institutions and the general public, in order to promote its use with renewable energies.

Schallenberg has stated that a "firm commitment must be made to take advantage of spaces such as building roofs, parking lots, reservoirs or greenhouses", since in these the bureaucratic procedures for their installation are "faster and simpler" and "could cover practically all the photovoltaic energy installation needs of the Canary Islands”.

The Deputy Minister has indicated that the Canary Islands Government holds regular meetings with "all the island councils to coordinate energy planning and promote the implementation of renewable energies throughout the archipelago, preventing any island from being left behind in the face of these advances".

The forum, a benchmark for the analysis of the situation and trends in the energy sector in the archipelago, is sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Technological Park of Solar Energy of Gran Canaria and has been organized by the association of Canary Islands Companies Producing Solar Energy (Sorecan) and the solar energy company SM Advance Energy.

In this latest edition, other issues of interest for the sustainability and self-consumption of the archipelago have been addressed, such as photovoltaic integration or the benefits offered by the Canary Islands in terms of investment opportunities.
