The Irish airline Ryanair has filed an appeal against AENA's plan to increase air fees by 4.09% during 2023, according to the tourism news portal preferente.com.

The company warns that this measure “endangers Spain's vital air connectivity, which constitutes the greatest threat to Spanish tourism since Covid.”

Ryanair currently has 30 air routes and 210 weekly flights in Lanzarote to different parts of Spain and numerous European countries.

The company has asked the Council of Ministers and the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) to “protect passenger growth by ensuring that Aena continues to respect the decision taken by the Spanish Government in 2021 to freeze airport fees until 2027”.

Its CEO, Eddie Wilson, recalls that “the Spanish Government made the sensible decision, at the height of the pandemic, to impose a 5-year fee freeze at all Spanish airports, positioning itself as one of the most competitive countries in Europe”. “In a single move, Aena intends to undo all the good work done to date,” he laments.
