The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands has published the call for subsidies for fishermen's associations and cooperatives of the sea corresponding to the years 2024 and 2025.

The budget items are increased in the two sections into which these aids are divided: current operating expenses and investments in equipment.

The credit allocated for current expenses increases to 1.39 million euros from the 1.09 million euros of the previous call and includes operating expenses such as supplies, liability insurance, contributions to federations, salaries or Social Security, as well as professional advisory services.

On the other hand, the section for investments in equipment is increased to 500,000 euros, with an increase of 100,000 euros compared to the previous call. It includes the adaptation of facilities for sale, the acquisition of computer equipment, the elements of transport of fishery products and industrial machinery or the improvement of social equipment of the entities.

In addition, with respect to previous calls, the present eliminates the limits of minimum and maximum amounts that each entity can receive in order to optimize the distribution of credits.

In this regard, as highlighted by the head of the Ministry, Narvay Quintero, "the increase in the financial sheet and the elimination of minimum and maximum limits allow us to respond more effectively, along with other lines of support such as direct aid established as a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, to the needs experienced by the sector due to the rise in the price of inputs."

"From the Canarian Government we understand the fundamental role played by fishermen's associations and cooperatives for the benefit of the entire Canarian fishing sector. That is why we are increasing with our own funds from the Ministry the items allocated to these entities, which go from one million euros to about 1.4 million," Quintero stressed.

The deadline to submit applications to benefit from these credits will end on November 29, 2024. These will be formalized through the electronic headquarters of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
