?Do you want to be a recreational boat skipper?

The first call of the year for obtaining the recreational boat skipper PER and basic navigation skipper PNB title will be held in Lanzarote on May 25. This call will be held at the Lanzarote Fishing School.

  • Which title should I get?

Depending on the navigation you want to do, each of these titles provides you with different powers, and can be obtained both sailing and motor. Below we detail the characteristics of each title.

1.- Navigation license:

It is the one formerly called "Titulin". It enables the control of up to 6 meters in length and maximum suitable power, daytime navigation and a maximum of two miles from the coast. It is done in a six-hour course and you do not have to take an exam.

2.- PNB: Basic Navigation Skipper Courses

With this title you can skipper boats of 8 meters in length and jet skis, up to five miles from the coast and also in night navigation. The practices will last 8 hours. The exam is a test type with a time of 45 minutes, with a maximum number of 17 questions answered incorrectly. The courses are face-to-face in the academies and the practices will leave from the port of Marina Rubicon. 4 hours of radio communications will be carried out, of which a minimum of two will be practical. Requirements to obtain the title

3.- PER: Recreational Boat Skipper

With this title you can skipper boats of 15 meters in length to 12 miles from the coast and jet skis. The practices will have a minimum duration of 16 hours, 32 hours if you want the sailing qualification. The exam is a test type with 45 questions, with a maximum number of 13 questions answered incorrectly and with a duration of 90 minutes. The courses are face-to-face in the academies. The short-range operator course will also be necessary, which will last 12 hours, with a minimum of 8 hours of practice.

If you want, with the complementary practices you can extend your powers up to 24 meters in length and navigation between islands in the Balearic and Canary archipelagos, either by motor or motor and sail. The practices will be carried out leaving the port of Marina Rubicón.

5.- Yacht Captain

It is the highest sports qualification to which we can aspire, world navigation, boats up to 24 meters in length, and recreational vessels. (Megayachts). Pass theoretical and practical exam on a 48-hour cruise.

  • ?With sixteen years, what title can I have?

At 16 years old, you can get the Navigation License to get started in the world of sailing and navigation.

  • Do you need to have previous studies?

No, both the PNB and the PER consist of syllabi within the reach of anyone who takes it seriously. Nomenclature, maneuver, International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, and in the case of PER the charts (the most beautiful part of the course).

For the yacht skipper and captain it is necessary to have "a well-furnished head" and be constant, since there are syllabi such as astronomical navigation, which require maximum effort.

  • How can I sign up?

?The exams are held at the Lanzarote Fishing School, but the courses are prepared in any of the nautical academies on the island, where we will be informed of the payment of fees, prices, practices, and we will be provided with the necessary material, such as books, nautical charts, etc. In these academies we will make our course registration.

  • How long does the preparation last?

In the case of PNB, the course usually lasts around a month, attending class for three days a week from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and in the case of PER, almost two months also in the same hours and generally Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

  • Can I do it on my own?

Yes, you can do it on your own, but the mandatory radio and navigation practices can only be carried out in the two nautical academies of Lanzarote, which organize the groups giving preference to their students, and you can run the risk of not carrying out the practices as quickly as you want.
