Endesa has just concluded the third edition of its Electric Mobility Plan for employees, totaling 534 who already drive a 100% electric car in their private life, which represents 6% of the workforce - 54 employees in the Canary Islands. Endesa's Canary Islands employees who already drive with zero emissions are spread across the 7 islands, with those in Tenerife leading the way, accounting for more than a third of the electric vehicles purchased by employees in the Archipelago.

The figures are also a good boost for the market: 7 out of every hundred electric cars sold in our country during the time the plan has been in place (it was launched in 2015) have been purchased by company employees. In this time, these vehicles have already traveled more than 7 million kilometers, avoiding the emission of more than 955 tons of recurring CO2 into the atmosphere each year, as well as the emission of particles and NOx, thus contributing to improving air quality in the city center.

All models acquired by Endesa employees are 100% electric and with approved autonomies that already reach more than 300 kilometers in some cases.

The plan has allowed choosing between the purchase or renting modality, with everything included (vehicle, maintenance and insurance). In this third edition, two modalities have been offered: all-inclusive renting contracts for 24 months or a revolving credit, which means avoiding additional costs and, above all, the possibility of returning the vehicle at the end of the contract to overcome the barrier of technological obsolescence.

To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the company gives preference to electric vehicles in the parking lot of its corporate headquarters and, in addition, participants can again opt for an economic incentive granted by the company for collaboration in the dissemination of the plan. Employees have the support of the project office created since the first edition to address all requests for information and accompany the employee during the process.

The company has also offered its employees and the general public facilities for the acquisition of a domestic charging point through the Integral Electric Vehicle Solution that allows the installation, maintenance, warranty and financing of the same.

The employee mobility plan has been associated since its inception with the installation of charging infrastructure in the company's main headquarters for possible emergencies that may arise for employees: both in the corporate headquarters in Madrid and in Seville there is an exclusive parking lot for electric vehicles with access to semi-fast chargers and there is also a fast charging point, valid for any vehicle model with which the employee can charge 80% of the battery in less than 20 minutes (also at the Barcelona headquarters).

A sustainable, safe and electrified mobility

The plan is part of Endesa's strategy to decarbonize the economy, through the electrification of demand and replacing the use of fossil fuels with others of renewable origin. In this process, electricity plays a fundamental role since its final use has zero emissions and at source, even today in Spain, it is 63.7% free of emissions. Transport is a key sector in the process of decarbonizing the economy and in 2016 was responsible for 27% of GHG emissions in Spain, being the activity with the highest volume of emissions above electricity generation, which represented 18% of emissions. Transport is also responsible for the worsening of air quality in cities.

Therefore, Endesa also has internal initiatives underway aimed at the electrification of transport:

Corporate fleet:

Within the measures incorporated in the Sustainable Mobility Plan, Endesa aims to optimize and electrify its vehicle fleet by 2021. The challenges include multiplying by 5 the percentage of electric vehicles in the fleet, from the current 4% to 15%, consolidating the presence of hybrid vehicles, with a percentage higher than 20%, and eliminating 25% of combustion vehicles in five years. All this would mean a reduction of emissions of 20%.

Since 2010, Endesa has multiplied by 4 the number of pure electric vehicles and throughout 2017 more units will be incorporated until reaching 100 electric vehicles by the end of the year

Endesa also has, since 2008, the largest commercial fleet of hybrid vehicles in Spain, consisting of 469 units that have managed to stop emitting more than 1,540 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Each vehicle of these characteristics emits one ton of CO2 less per year than a diesel engine car.

To this is added a new plan to electrify the fleet of representation vehicles of the management team (13% of the total fleet, about 340 cars). The goal is that within four years, 4 out of 10 vehicles in this segment will be hybrid or 100% electric. Today, almost a quarter already have a plug-in hybrid car.

Corporate Car Sharing:

Another of the initiatives that Endesa has launched in this area is the new car sharing service, consisting of a pool of electric vehicles made available to employees so that they can carry out their work in a sustainable and non-polluting way. Employees have an online tool to reserve the vehicle for hours or even full days.

This service is currently provided in seven locations and is composed of 21 BMW i3 vehicles, with an approximate range of 130 km for the first models in service and 300 km for the new vehicles acquired in 2017, with the extension of the number of vehicles and the extension of the service to other locations planned for 2018. The balance during the first two years of implementation of the service has been very positive, with 1,300 registered users to date, more than 5,000 services performed and more than 200,000 km traveled, which is equivalent to a saving of emissions of more than 24 tons of CO2. Among the objectives is to reach the figure of 1,000,000 km traveled in 2021.

Awards and recognitions

The implementation of this plan and its success among Endesa employees has been recognized in various fields, such as having been selected as a Climate Project 2016 by the Spanish Office of Climate Change in recognition of its contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. This new edition of the plan aims to renew this recognition, currently being in the final phase of selection of the Climate Projects 2017. Its inclusion would allow one more year the recognition of its contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Likewise, during the year 2017, this Plan has received the award for the best business practice in the XIII Benchmarking Conference of CSR organized by the Club of Excellence in Sustainability. It has also received the award for the best business initiative 2017 of sustainable mobility by the Spanish Association of Fleet Managers of Automobiles (AEGFA). Additionally, it has been selected as one of the 60 finalist projects of the 475 companies participating in the framework of the Sustainable Life in Cities initiative with the aim of publicizing the best practices in CSR related to urban sustainability, from the environmental and social perspectives.
