This 2021 started with uncertainty for Lanzarote wines. However, in the first semester of the year, positive data has been recorded, which can boost its activity and bring optimism within the sector.

On the one hand, so far this year, the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin Vinos de Lanzarote has given the wineries a total of 1,155,967 counter-labels. Although this figure is still not close to that of last year - more than 1.7 million counter-labels throughout the year - the data recorded this June has been much better than in the same month of years prior to the pandemic, such as 2018 and 2019.

It should be noted that these counter-labels are the guarantee that the Regulatory Council offers to the wineries of Lanzarote that wish to bottle wine within the Designation of Origin. Therefore, these serve to keep control of the bottles that are being bottled on the island.

In addition, in 2021 the wineries have achieved new marketing channels. The situation derived from the pandemic caused by Covid-19 led the wineries to focus their efforts on online channels. In addition, the rise in consumption on food platforms in recent months has helped wineries to overcome the difficult situation that is being experienced.

Wineries adapted to the market

Despite these difficulties, the wineries of Lanzarote have done an excellent job and have put all their effort into adapting to the demands of the market, offering new proposals; always with the best quality. In this sense, the Tinajo Natural winery launched its "T de Tinajo" at the end of last year, a new signature red wine made with Listán Negro grapes with three months of maturation. Also, around that time, Bodega La Mareta renewed its Tinto Listán Negro, now elaborating it through a manual stripping of the bunches, which enhances the fruity aromas of this variety during maceration.

For its part, Bodega Vulcano de Lanzarote took advantage of this 2021 to present its new wine: Blanc de Noirs. This is a limited edition, of which only 3,000 bottles have been produced, made exclusively with Listán Negro grapes from the 2020 harvest. In addition, it should be noted that the wineries of Lanzarote are open to the public and, strictly following the safety and hygiene measures established by Covid19, offer visits for all those interested in learning about their wines and history.

A year of international awards

This year has also been a success for Lanzarote wines in terms of awards. There are several references and wineries that have been recognized by experts from around the world in competitions such as Mundus Vini, The World of Malvasía, Berliner Wein Trophy; or the Bacchus Awards, among many others.

In the words of the president of the Regulatory Council, Víctor Díaz: “Thanks to the support we have experienced from local consumption and the effort that the winegrowers and winemakers of Lanzarote are making, we are beginning to see the future with optimism. Without a doubt, all the work that has been done in this complicated year will also serve to attract tourism back to the island and continue developing our sector, which continues to innovate and adapt to the tastes and needs of consumers every day”.
