Members of the Government pact in the Canary Islands celebrate the approval of their fourth budget

The Parliament of the Canary Islands approved yesterday its fourth budget of the legislature, for a total amount of 10,180 million euros and an increase of 31% in social items.

The president of the Canary government, Ángel Víctor Torres, highlighted the stability achieved by the current government pact in the islands, since, "for the second time in history and in something that is exceptional in the archipelago, an Executive begins and ends the legislature without breaking and approving four budgets".

Torres considers that these fourth approved accounts demonstrate that, "despite the difficulties, the Government has been able to remain united, something exceptional and one of its fundamental pillars. This is a Government that approves its budget with the largest increase in social spending, 31%, and that continues to strengthen the welfare state, health, education, investment and social rights".

He also stressed that the Canary Islands is now "a stronger region than when we arrived and these accounts will help improve the lives of citizens", praising the work of the Government's economic team. "We are in magnificent hands," he said.

Román Rodríguez Román Rodríguez recalled that the concatenation of different crises "were combated from a progressive policy, protecting the most vulnerable and leaving no one behind". "We have increased social spending and incentivized the economy without raising taxes or resorting to debt, while almost doubling public investment," added the economic vice president.

Noemí Santana, Minister of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth and representative of Podemos in the executive, expressed her satisfaction for "having added our votes to this pact that has brought so much good to the Canary Islands, since we are now in better islands than those we found, with better public services, more people working and more people in health and education".

Casimiro Curbelo from La Gomera pointed out that the "act is the prelude to something, probably the re-edition of the government pact, which some predicted would last less than a candy at the door of a school, but which has already approved four budgets in the toughest stage that the Canary Islands has experienced". He stressed that the accounts are dedicated, in large part, "to the weakest and most vulnerable; to health, education, social rights, which now have 669 million, and after approving two laws as important as the Fight against Climate Change, which will be very important from next year, and the Citizen Income". He also considered it key that 7,478 million euros of the 10,180 of the global figure approved today are allocated to the Welfare State, with housing and employment included, as well as that there are 1,746 million to incentivize the economy with public investment.
