The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Teresa Cruz, and the Head of Epidemiology of the General Directorate of Public Health, Domingo Núñez, appeared this Wednesday at a press conference to update the information regarding the four positives for coronavirus detected in the south of Tenerife, who remain admitted to a hospital on the island and in good health. In all these cases, samples have been taken and sent to the Carlos III Health Institute, which is the national reference center and must corroborate these positives. As for the rest of the Italian tourists who traveled in the same group, all have tested negative.
Cruz Oval detailed the surveillance situation of the hotel, in the South of Tenerife, where these people were spending their vacations. In this sense, she pointed out that 100% of the guests of that center have been screened in just nine hours, taking samples from those people that the health technicians have considered close contacts of the positive cases or who presented some symptoms.
Regarding the different measures to be taken, the counselor indicated that "Health has adopted an order to isolate all the guests who were in the hotel and, depending on that order, which will be modified today, the workers are going to move to active surveillance, being able to enter and leave the premises with the necessary precautions."
Monitoring of hotel guests
This monitoring will also be applied to the 106 people who entered the hotel last Monday. As for the rest of the guests, Teresa Cruz explained that those who are asymptomatic will be able to lead a normal life inside the hotel, "adopting the necessary measures", while those who present some symptoms will remain in their rooms.
For his part, Domingo Núñez highlighted the fact that the rest of the citizens of the group that traveled with the four positives for coronavirus have tested negative in the tests carried out. "The number of people we have found with symptoms is very low, which is good news," he added.
The Minister of Health emphasized her gratitude to the health personnel deployed to the hotel, "who have been working 24 hours, in many cases on their day off", and who will be reinforced throughout the day this Wednesday. In addition, she also conveyed her gratitude to the hotel's management team "for their collaboration and understanding", as well as to the guests, the College of Pharmacists of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Subdelegation of the Government and the media for the work they are doing "transmitting truthful information to avoid a situation of social alarm".
