The Civil Guard seized this Tuesday 11,000 masks from China that were going to be sold on the island of Lanzarote. The operation, carried out in coordination with the Canary Islands Tax Agency, took place at the Gran Canaria airport, during merchandise inspection procedures.

In total, 22 packages were immobilized that were "in transit" and had a low customs value. Although they had five different recipients, they were all due to arrive in Lanzarote, presumably for commercial use.

For this reason, the agents of the Fiscal Detachment of the Gran Canaria Airport carried out the appropriate checks and were able to verify that each package contained 500 surgical masks inside, giving a total of 11,000 units. In this regard, the Civil Guard recalls that this is sanitary material affected by the regulations in the Royal Decree declaring a state of alarm for the management of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus.

The Civil Guard thus carried out the corresponding inspection and seizure report, making the material available to the health authority. Specifically, by order of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, the masks were made available to the Ministry of Health, which decided to transfer them to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital.
