Two agents of the Moroccan Gendarmerie in El Aaiún (Western Sahara) have collaborated with the Civil Guard in joint patrols in Lanzarote for the prevention of irregular immigration and border control.
As reported by the Las Palmas Command, the two bodies have tightening their collaboration against "criminal networks dedicated to facilitating irregular migration, possible departures of boats from Morocco, organized crime around immigration, facilitators of means and connections between networks established both in Spain and in Morocco".
"A fundamental aspect of this strategy will be the concentration of efforts in key embarkation and disembarkation areas. This measure has among its objectives to deter networks dedicated to the illicit trafficking of people, thus protecting the lives of those who are tempted to undertake dangerous sea voyages," details the Civil Guard in a statement released this Tuesday.
The ultimate goal of this initiative, adds, is to contribute to combat the networks that facilitate irregular migration towards the Canary Islands.
The Civil Guard emphasizes that "the reinforced collaboration between Spain and Morocco is a significant step towards a more effective and humane migratory management, which seeks to protect both border security and the lives of migrant people."
It is not the first time that Moroccan police agents patrol alongside the armed institute the coasts of the island, even in September 2024 assisted the arrival of 64 migrant people on Arrieta beach.
