The Canary Islands will receive 3.8 million for the construction of a virtual augmented reality studio that will contribute to boosting its audiovisual production, as announced this week by the First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño.
The Vice-President made the announcement at a press conference offered together with the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, on the occasion of the celebration of the OECD Ministerial Conference on the Digital Economy, which is being held these days in the archipelago.
This project, she stressed, will promote "quality employment" in the Canary Islands and aims to continue promoting the diversification of the islands' economy, something that for the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, is a reality that can already be seen in the growth of employment in the different economic sectors.
OECD Summit
The Minister of Economic Affairs has expressed her "excitement" that this meeting can be held in the Canary Islands, which means that Europe is, for the first time, the host of a summit whose preparation, she stressed, began in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Faced with this historic event, which according to Torres will allow these islands to "teach and learn about digitalization", Calviño considered that Spain is leading the international debate on digital transformation, an area to which it is intended to give a humanistic perspective, so that people are at the center.
The First Vice-President of the Government has estimated that digitalization is a lever for growth and prosperity, hence the investments that the Executive makes in this sector are made seeking co-governance with the autonomous communities.
Calviño has reported that the Government of the Canary Islands has received 1.3 billion euros to promote this type of transformative investments, which have benefited 2,700 companies, universities, people, foundations and city councils.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and blockchain
In addition, she announced that this Wednesday the first sectoral conference will be held in which funds will be distributed for the RETECH project, which will allocate 530 million euros to emblematic digital transformation projects in the autonomous communities.
Regarding this initiative, Calviño stressed that the Canary Islands is very involved, since it will participate, together with others, in three projects related to tourism digitalization, SME cybersecurity and "Blockchain" technology, which generates a shared database that is accessed by its participants, who can track each transaction they have made.
Asked about the possible participation of the Canary Islands in the PERTE of microelectronics and semiconductors, Nadia Calviño said that the Government of Spain is interested in promoting this activity throughout the national territory.
