The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has joined the manifesto in which the Ministry of Health is urged to take measures to address the deficit of Resident Internal Physician (MIR) positions in Family and Community Medicine and on the accreditation criteria for these specialists.
Canary Islands joins other regions such as the Basque Country, Andalusia, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Aragon, La Rioja, Murcia, Madrid, Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, the Balearic Islands and Cantabria, which have already joined this manifesto in favor of improvements in the field of Primary Care.
The manifesto was promoted by the governments of Galicia and the Basque Country to demand urgent shock measures from the Ministry of Health in the face of the lack of doctors in Primary Care and proposes concrete measures to alleviate the deficit of MIR positions in Family and Community Medicine.
This document includes six proposals for urgent measures of ministerial competence that could contribute to resolving the situation of MIR shortage in Primary Care and that "could serve as a basis for a great national agreement of shock measures to address a problem that is currently affecting professionals and patients throughout the country."

This document includes a series of proposals for urgent measures of ministerial competence that could contribute to resolving the situation of MIR shortage in Primary Care.
Thus, the signatories request that the MIR position selection system does not leave positions vacant, since "it is necessary to arbitrate exceptional solutions that facilitate the filling of all positions offered."
They also request the urgent expansion of the number of specialized medical training positions in Family and Community Medicine to be able to face the generational change, for which it is necessary to modify the regulations on accreditation requirements of the teaching units to make this process more flexible and agile.
The signatories consider it necessary to carry out a call for extraordinary MIR positions in the specialty of Family and Community Medicine to favor the increase of these positions that corrects the situation of current and future deficit due to the planned retirements.
Likewise, they highlight the importance of developing instruments that allow the National Health System to plan its training offer more rigorously in the future.
Finally, and within the Action Plan for Primary Care 2022-2023 adopted by the Interterritorial Council of the SNS, they propose the promotion and implementation of all those measures that facilitate the development of competence of the specialist doctor in Family and Community Medicine, providing him with time and space to recover his role as the backbone of the best comprehensive care for citizens.
