The Government Council of the Canary Islands, during its weekly meeting, has supported the bill formulated by the municipalities of Teguise, Yaiza and Tías, as well as other municipalities of the islands such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán, in Gran Canaria; Arona, Adeje, Guía de Isora, Puerto de la Cruz and Santiago del Teide, in Tenerife; and Pájara, La Oliva and Antigua, in Fuerteventura, to establish a legal framework that regulates the tourist municipalities of the Canary Islands. In addition, the regional Executive has forwarded the agreement to the Canarian Parliament.
The legislative initiative addresses aspects such as the requirements and procedures for the acquisition or loss of the status of tourist municipality, the specific rights and obligations derived from this consideration and the complementary administrative organization of these locations.
Among the purposes that these tourist municipalities must fulfill are the increase of the habitability conditions, paying special attention to the renovation and improvement of the tourist urban environment and to the diversification, renovation and improvement of the existing tourist offer.
Regarding the obligations, the text includes the conservation and promotion of free public spaces and their equipment, -especially green areas, natural landscapes, beaches, sports facilities, public parks, leisure centers and collective recreation-; and the adoption of measures for the protection and recovery of the natural environment and the landscape.
Similarly, actions are established to promote sustainable mobility. In addition, it is noted that they must dedicate a part of the income from the use of tourist resources to their maintenance and to establish communication channels so that stakeholders can propose improvements or alert of bad practices in the tourist field, in order to progressively eradicate them.
The Government of the Canary Islands has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to dialogue and social participation to work for the general welfare of the Canarian citizens, also constituting an instrument of good governance and institutional quality.
