The Cabildo of Lanzarote convened a meeting this morning with the seven town councils and the security and emergency services of the island in order to face the cyclone that is approaching during this coming weekend.
The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, pointed out that "the meeting with all the mayors of the island aims at coordination and as a priority the safety of the population." She also stressed that they want to be in coordination with the town councils to deal with any incident arising from the storm," she stressed.
David Suárez, territorial delegate of AEMET in the Canary Islands, explained the probabilities of the formation of the cyclone, which would greatly affect the southwest of the islands. "There are already orange level warnings for Sunday in the western islands and yellow level warnings for the eastern and part of the western islands throughout the weekend. We are being conservative and cautious," explained the delegate.
Therefore, the Government has declared this afternoon the situation of maximum alert for rain in the Canary Islands, from 00:00 hours on Saturday. This alert will possibly extend until Monday, reaching the most intense point of the phenomena from the early hours of Sunday.
As a result of the meteorological situation, the Cabildo informs that all outdoor activities planned for this weekend are suspended from next Saturday at 12:00 hours until the end of the alert period, thus canceling sports, leisure, social, cultural, extracurricular and complementary activities.
In this way, the sports, cultural, leisure and social facilities dependent on the Cabildo will be closed to the public, with the exception of day and residential centers.
In this regard, the island's Cabildo details that the celebration of the closing ceremony of the I Island Cup of Canarian Ball of Wood for people over 60 years is postponed, as well as the concert of José Vélez that was to take place this Sunday.
Without prejudice to the closure and suspension agreed, it is recommended that the population avoid, as far as possible, any type of recreational or recreational activity in outdoor spaces.
