The State Meteorological Agency has issued a yellow warning to all the Canary Islands starting next Sunday, due to the heavy rains that will be caused by the tropical depression that is forming in the Atlantic, with amounts of up to 80 liters per square meter in twelve hours.
The Aemet warned this Friday that the US National Hurricane Center already puts the probability of a tropical cyclone forming in the Atlantic at 70% in the next 48 hours, which would then move as a tropical depression from Cape Verde in a northerly direction.
It is not expected that the tropical depression will pass over the Canary Islands, so "the wind will not be a widespread adverse factor", but the islands will not be free from the effects that this phenomenon will generate in this area of the Atlantic, Meteorology remarks.
In fact, moderate rains are expected from next Saturday, which on Sunday will reach a strong intensity, especially in the western islands. For this reason, yellow level warnings have been activated today on all the islands with effects from 0.00 hours on Sunday.
It is expected that the rainfall will discharge that day up to 15 liters per square meter in one hour. In La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and a good part of Tenerife, up to 80 liters per square meter will accumulate in twelve hours; and in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, up to 40 liters per square meter.
The Aemet plans to update its forecasts on this episode throughout the day, which it is closely monitoring in collaboration with the US National Hurricane Center.
