A resident of Tías has started a signature collection on the web change.org to request the removal of the antenna from the Tias sports center. "It has been with us for more than 20 years and has accompanied us so much that it is now part of our daily life, but radiation represents one of the new environmental threats of the 21st century," warns Jesús Lemes, who states that other residents of the municipality also participate in this initiative.
"Despite the lack of consensus in the scientific community, information has been gathered about the causal relationship between electromagnetic pollution and problems such as cancer. There are studies that suggest that prolonged exposure can be harmful, in addition to being a serious aesthetic alteration of the town," he adds in his writing.
In addition, he emphasizes that "in no other municipality of Lanzarote is there an antenna of these proportions in the middle of the municipality", and asks that it be moved to another place "where it has less impact", to "prevent any harm".
"No one voted for its installation. Far from consulting the people by means of a referendum, they turned a deaf ear to the protests at the time (demonstrations and signature collections)", questions Jesús Lemes, who asks the neighbors to join and sign this initiative. "If you value your health and your town, it is time to let the mayor know what the people need," he demands.
